Below are several books that we have read or listened to in my home. Experiencing loss through a character in a fictional or real-life story is often easier than facing the loss of a sibling head on. These stories opened my children to discussing their feelings, or at least allowing themselves to grieve quietly. Jellybean: A Baby’s Journey to God addresses the loss of an unborn child in the context of the Catholic faith, ending on a note of hope and joy. The Whale of the Wild is my favorite novel for addressing the loss. The thoughts of the sister are well-written and the surrounding story of the pod - or family - of whales, including grandma and uncle and brother, is captivating.
